Few adults at risk for viral hepatitis B because of a diagnosis with
an STD are actually tested for exposure, and even fewer who tested
susceptible initiated the vaccine series in the primary care setting,
according to researchers from Kaiser Permanente.
“There are missed opportunities in primary care in testing of active HBV infection as
well as in identifying candidates for HBV vaccination in adults seeking
evaluation and care for STDs,” the researchers wrote in Clinical Infectious Diseases.
“Implementation of targeted clinical decision-making support tools in
the [electronic medical records] system may potentially improve
hepatitis B testing and vaccination rates.”
