If a hepatitis B cure is discovered, it might very well happen inside the walls of the Pennsylvania Biotechnology Center in Bucks County.
Michael J. Sofia is hopeful a start-up company he co-founded — OnCore Biopharma — is the one that makes the breakthrough. (Sofia knows a thing or two about hepatitis and liver disease. He's
credited with inventing and leading the research team that developed
Sovaldi, a hepatitis C therapy approved by the FDA in December.)
OnCore Biopharma is the early stages of developing a potential cure
for hepatitis B, an infectious disease of the liver that afflicts an
estimated 400 million people worldwide.
